Duncan and Terrence snored lightly in the moon-lit room, but I couldn’t sleep. After everything that had happened, my limbs felt drained, my body was sore in the most delicious ways, and my tummy was full of the delicious meal Duncan had brought over for us all to enjoy in bed.

“It would be a shame for you to put your clothes back on,” he had reasoned.

After the meal, after the exercise, everything in me wanted to go to sleep. But I couldn’t. I couldn’t get my mind to settle down, to stop deciding between what I wanted and what I needed to do.

I knew what I needed to do.

In the morning, I would have to feign that my family had contacted me and wanted me back, and then I’d have to ask Duncan and Terrence to accompany me there so that my pack could keep them prisoner until Alex and Lewis gave in to my dad’s demands. And then that would be it. Moonstone would belong to my father. If he was successful. But my part would have been fulfilled.

But what about Terrence and Duncan? Would they survive? Would they get killed because they couldn’t shift? Would they run?

My mind went in a million directions, wondering what would happen next. But then again, I knew I could prevent the whole thing from happening. I had the power to. I trusted these men. And they trusted me.

They don’t trust you that much, my mind told me. They haven’t told you they can’t shift yet.

That was a point. They hadn’t shared that part with me. Could they really love me if they weren’t upfront enough to tell me about this important part of themselves?

Get over yourself, I thought. You haven’t been honest with them, either. Far from it, in fact.

I closed my eyes, replaying the moment over and over in my head, the moment they told me they loved me. The moment they told me I was their mate.

Mate.

It was such a strong word, something with such powerful implications. It was such a strange cultural thing with this pack. Or perhaps, it was my culture that was the strange one. I wondered if other packs talked in terms of mates like they did, if they talked about finding the one that they coupled with for life as destiny the way this pack did.

It was so strange. It felt almost as if there was a partnership that was happening here. The way they asked me every step of the way if I was comfortable, if I wanted what they wanted. They were so kind and gentle with me when I wanted them to be, and rough when I didn’t. They were attentive to my every need while I was vulnerable and exposed to them.

In my pack, men took mates only to make pups. There was no partnership in it. I had seen relationships that were loveless. The relationship between my dad and my mom, who had died a couple of years previously, had been an example of that.
